Canada’s Trucker Convoy: Russia Today (RT) and its Disinfo in Western Democracies

I can from extensive personal experience on the ground in Russia say that what RT promotes there, with regard to public health and support for government institutions at least, is the diametric opposite of what RT promotes in western democracies. For example RT promotes vaccines inside Russia but is virulently opposed to them everywhere else. The objects being to stir up controversy in polities adverse to the Kremlin, to divide, and to undermine trust in democratic institutions. The principal human targets are “the predisposed”, as Karen Stenner would put it (see her important The Authoritarian Dynamic); they are the most authoritarian and therefore gullible, ethnocentric, and simplicity-seeking third of most populations.

This recent article from disinfowatch.org is focused on RT’s support for Canada’s trucker protests, but it also tells the general story of RT’s nefarious efforts in western countries. It should be a high priority in Canada to address the problem of RT and similar sources. In Canada speech can be limited to an extent reasonable in a free and democratic society. Does this mean censor and suppress? I’m not sure about that. But the infospace in democracies is especially vulnerable and the potential consequences of takeover so dire, that copying Germany (they turned off RT) is worth looking at.
